There is a unique magic to the dry deciduous forests of Central India. The air smells of dust and dry leaves, the canopy echoes with warning calls, and every turn of the safari track holds the promise of an unforgettable encounter. Last week, I set out to explore two incredible wildlife havens: Pench Tiger Reserve and the Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary.
The journey left me with a memory card full of incredible frames and a heart full of stories. Here is a glimpse of the wilderness through my lens.
The King of Central India: A Thrilling Encounter in Umred
You can go on a hundred safaris, but the adrenaline rush of spotting a Royal Bengal Tigers never changes. We were incredibly fortunate to cross paths with this magnificent predator.
Watching this apex predator sit calmly by the track, completely unbothered by our presence, was a masterclass in raw power and grace. Moments later, the tiger stood up and walked confidently down the path, offering us a spectacular view.

The sheer thrill reached its peak when the tiger crossed the road right between the safari gypsies, leaving every single person in the vehicle completely breathless.
Sentinels of the Grasslands and Woods
While the big cats always steal the spotlight, the true essence of the jungle lies in its diverse herbivore population. Each species has adapted beautifully to its environment.
In the open, golden grasslands, we spotted a majestic Nilgai (Blue Bull) standing tall against the shimmering yellow grass.
Deep inside the denser teak forested patches, the elusive Sambar Deer made an appearance. Camouflaged perfectly against the brown leaf litter, this magnificent stag stood frozen, watching our movements with intense, alert eyes.
Wonders of the Canopy: Avian Treasures
As a passionate birdwatcher, no safari is complete without keeping my eyes trained on the treetops. The avian diversity during this trip was absolutely spectacular.
Perched high on a stark, bare branch against the clear sky, we encountered a magnificent Oriental Honey Buzzard. The raptor sat with absolute poise, scanning the forest floor below for its next meal.
Adding a vibrant splash of color to our journey was the state bird of Maharashtra—the Yellow-footed Green Pigeon. Spotting it feeding quietly amidst the green foliage was the perfect finale to an incredible wildlife expedition.
Final Thoughts
This expedition to Pench and Umred was a gentle reminder of how beautifully balanced nature is when left undisturbed. From the floor of the forest to the highest canopy, life thrives in every corner.
If you are planning your next wilderness getaway, Central India's forests should undoubtedly be at the top of your list.
